After six years of research and broad consultation, the new IUCN Red List Categories were adopted and formally published by the IUCN in 1994. It has been developed to improve the objectivity in assessing the th reatened status of species and thus improve consistency between users. The paper outlines the new categories and criteria and provides an explanation of how the new evaluation process should be carried out.
